Greetings by Time of Day
Buenos días means good morning. Buenas tardes is good afternoon. Buenas noches is good evening or good night. Hola works anytime. ¿Cómo estás? asks how someone is informally; ¿Cómo está usted? is formal.
Introducing Yourself
Me llamo... means my name is. Mucho gusto means nice to meet you. ¿De dónde eres? asks where you are from. Soy de... tells your origin. Use por favor (please) and gracias (thank you) daily.
Numbers and Classroom Words
Count from uno to veinte for basic math and dates. La clase means class; el profesor or la profesora is the teacher. ¿Cómo se dice...? asks how do you say something. Repite, por favor means please repeat.
Formal vs Informal
Tú is informal you; usted is formal. Verb endings and greetings change with formality. Use usted with teachers and adults you do not know well. Peers often use tú among friends.
